From the moment my feet hit the ground in the morning, I’m on the go. Being “Mommy” consumes much of my waking (and sometimes sleeping) hours. Then there’s my contract work, ministry commitments and the everyday stuff of life. My days are full of good things to be done, with a to-do list that seems never ending. You too?
The to-be list
Today that list was put on hold when I came down with a nasty virus. With dishes sitting on the counter in the kitchen, laundry piled high beside me on the couch and toys multiplying on every visible surface, I was forced to rest. Commitments canceled, I cuddled up with my 3-year-old and took a nap. My husband made dinner and served me on the couch.
At some point this afternoon, I started to think, to just think; about what I am doing, what I hope for my family, and who I want to be. The last part gave me pause and a list began to form, first in my head and then on paper: The To-Be List. Things that I am (or not) and want to be more fully:
- In-tune with God
And in no particular order, the list went on. These are not the things I normally have time – or take the time – to think about, but are probably more important than my ever-pressing to-do list. These are the things that set me apart, and impact all the things I want to do for the better.
Living fully from within is my longing – to be all of whom God called me.
To be all I am created to be
As I look at my list, I remember who I’ve been, who I am now and who I want to be. Most importantly I am reminded of who God created me to be and calls me to be.
He has entrusted me – and you – with many responsibilities: to our jobs, homes, families and communities. It’s no wonder we sometimes feel the weight of the world on us.
One of my favorite verses isn’t about what God called us to do but rather what he calls us to be: loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled (Galatians 5:22-23). In fact, 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
In each of our lives, in each of our circumstances, God pushes us to more than just a good to-do list. He cares about who we are and longs to help us grow into all He has made us to be.
“Wherever you are, be all there. Live to the hilt any situation you believe to be the will of God.” (Jim Elliott)
